It turned out Jim's engine had sputtered and quit on Saratoga Springs Road, shortly after crossing the Amargosa River. Bill towed him several miles out to the main highway to Ashford Junction.
We thought it was all over. It seemed to be the fuel pump, which is mounted above the gas tank. No way to make a field repair on that. Time to drive to Shoshone, get a tow truck and make the long sad ride back to Baker for repair. End of the trip... Oh well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. We have had pretty good luck over the years.
